The Receiving Wound
When you haven't easily received what you needed in the past, it's easy to believe that it has to be hard to receive what you need and desire.
Emalani is a multimedia publication service by Emma Emalani Bennett, an author, teacher, and transpersonal empowerment coach intended to guide you towards empowerment by integrating your whole self, which gives you unrestricted access to your personal power. You'll receive guidance on self-love, leadership, success, and wealth, drawing from various disciplines such as psychobiology, transpersonal psychology, and spirituality.
Hello Visionary, yes that’s you,
You’re a visionary. You build, dream, create, and contribute.
But underneath the ambition, you quietly struggle to receive.
You resist ease, even when it shows up.
You minimize your own wins.
You brace for the letdown, even in moments of success.
And you tell yourself, “Maybe I’m just wired this way.”
But what if that’s not the truth?
What if you can REWIRE the Receiving Wound?
When you haven’t easily received what you needed in the past, it’s easy to live in disbelief, in constant wanting, in anticipation of future thwarting, and to believe that it’s going to be hard to receive what you need and desire. The Receiving Wound is like a parasitic vine that entwines around a tree as though it were a part of it—and many of us believe it to be a part of us because we go on living with it being a part of our lives for so long. That is, until it becomes unbearable for us to continue doing so.
The Receiving Wound seeps into finances, career, relationships, self-worth, and even small daily moments. It’s the voice, the subvocalization, in your head that goes on like a neverending stock ticker: “It’s always going to be hard. It can’t be so easy.” It’s the tension in your body when someone offers support you, and you instinctively say, “No, I got it.” It’s the deep-seated belief that things don’t come easy for you.
When we live in this state of disbelief, we can unconsciously hold ourselves back from what we desire. We grip too tightly to control, we dismiss opportunities, and we resist the flow of life. It can be hard to hold positive expectancy. We may beat disappointment to the punch by habitually dissuading ourselves from getting our hopes up. When we do receive what we want and appreciate, we may still await the other shoe dropping with bated breath. That pesky thought ticker may keep running the words, “Not for you, not for you, not for you…” Receiving can feel unnatural and awkward— even when the universe is handing us exactly what we asked for.
The only cure for the insidious poison that The Receiving Wound secretes is generosity. When we realize that opening up to graciously receive life’s generosity is a way of being generous towards ourselves, to others, and even the universe, we begin to restore, recover, and expand our capacity for even greater generosity. Recognition is a good start. Recognizing life’s generosity in all the ways it manifests in our lives, whether it be as simple as someone genuinely smiling in our presence and noticing that us being there is a source of their joy, or perhaps something as grand as a big break.
You can start to fathom generosity by imagining that you are at the beach. You have a bucket. You go out to the ocean and scoop up a bucketful of salty, briny water, and then you dump it onto the beach. You go back out again and repeat this action. How many times can you go out to the ocean and keep doing this before you drain the whole ocean? You can’t. Life’s generosity is endless this way. Train yourself to see it, give and receive it, know it by heart, believe it, be it, and have faith in it. Counter that thought ticker with, “Yes, for me. Yes, for me. Yes, for me…”
And, as my therapist Edwin says, “Why not you?”
If you’re building something meaningful...
If your work pours from your heart...
If you hold space for other people’s dreams...
Then receiving isn’t optional.
It’s imperative.
You can’t run a visionary life on fumes.
This is where the shift begins.
Because it’s not selfish to receive.
When you receive more, you are in a position to be a powerhouse of generosity.
Giving and receiving is exhalation and inhalation.
You are connected to all.
You are a part of the Universe, the Universe is a part of you.
Why not you?

True Generosity
When we think of generosity, we often think of giving, contribution, charity, service—things we should do to appear magnanimous. Even our ideas of empathy can extend to walking in another person’s shoes and suffering with them as an act of emotional generosity. Hence, we have the phenomenon of compassion fatigue that comes about when this becomes depleting. There’s a sense of the obligatory about it and it feels more like depletion and scarcity than true generosity...

“Bennett is a sensitive, thoughtful, and confident writer, with a clear desire to help others change their lives, or at least their mindset. Unpacking the apparent conflict between 'sacred' and 'logical,' and combining spiritual ideas with science and reason. Bennett’s powerful lived experience and her stunning story of personal growth provide her with authenticity and authority as an expert in overcoming hardship. Manifestation, astrology, re-architecting your reality, and changing your energetic course in life are just a few of the complex subjects Emma Bennett explores, and by and large she does a good job of weaving seemingly disparate ideas together into a cohesive whole.”

A Note from Emma
Mahalo nui loa, thank you for being a part of this global community of compassionate, brilliant, heart-centered human beings. You are a gift of Source, and the light you ripple from just being who you are into this world matters deeply.
People often ask how I can still be joyful, peaceful, and positive after everything I’ve experienced — an ACE (Adverse Childhood Experience) score of 8/10, a coma, trauma, neurological complications, life experiences that stretched a dark night of the soul into multiple decades. Shamanic traditions of the Americas consider the lower world to be the place you can dive into the depths of to recover your power. I made the choice to do so and you can too.
My work as a soul alchemist and transformation catalyst helps visionary humans like you transform struggle into power, doubt into genius, and blocks into breakthroughs.
I work across four levels of reality — objective, subjective, symbolic, and holistic — to create transformation that lasts. This isn’t surface-level mindset woowoo new age dryer lint fluff. This is real, deep rewiring of your energy, intention, identity, and capacity to hold life, love, wealth, power and purpose. And to live and manifest from wholeness.

“Emma’s sparkling prose achieves a degree of communication with the reader in a manner few other writers of this genre can claim. Her spirit soars like the ideas she purports. Learning of her own journey to enlightenment adds to the credibility of her recommendations for truly seeking awareness. As she shares, ‘The energy I put into this book will pass on to you and the message I have to offer will sink into your subconscious, which will awaken a new perspective and awareness throughout your life. Trust your soul to sort it all out and go through life heartfirst instead of headfirst. This will provide you with the most amazing experiences of a lifetime. Your heart knows the way. Your head doesn’t have a clue.’” — Grady, reivewer of Written Into Reality: The Art of Co-Creating Your Dreams to Life
