Hello Visionary, yes that’s you,
From the first of February, a stress meteor hit my life and I started to lose my appetite, had trouble sleeping, and was so agitated that it was hard to take a nap even if I had the free time available to. After a while of this, I began to realize that the cortisol stress hormone and tension buildup throughout the day was making it so that, by the time it was time for bed, I was like a shaken up fizzy drink. There is an odd way that such an experience is not entirely negative—being totally knackered throughout the day was one way to make it so that I couldn’t launch into overthinking and frenetic activity anymore, so there was a benefit to being like this despite the consequences.
Once I became the slightest bit aware of what was happening, that small sprout of awareness began to create space in my life that gradually pushed a buffer zone between me and the stressor, enough to allow sufficient clear-headedness to see what needed to be done and do it. I started to set 20-minute, sometimes 40-minute, “do nothing” timers throughout the day with some acupressure help and shamanic meditations no matter how hard it was to stay still and not ruminate. Gradually, this had the effect of letting the air out of a balloon throughout the day and by bedtime, I was way more ready to sleep. Now, I am sleeping well again.
That little gap of awareness has the power to turn everything around to a new direction. This quote from A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle—“Awareness is the greatest agent for change.”—is fundamentally about metacognition, the ability to become conscious of our own consciousness. Metacognition allows us to step outside of automatic thought patterns, habitual reactions, and unconscious conditioning to observe ourselves with clarity.
Metacognition is to become aware that you are aware.
This is what all those spiritual and higher consciousness books are talking about when they talk about awareness, being the observer, mindfulness, and presence.
Consistently practicing metacognition, mindfulness, and present-moment awareness can create profound positive shifts in health, wealth, success, and relationships by rewiring the brain for clarity, emotional intelligence, and intentional action.
